Sam Altman leads OpenAI and, since August 2025, sits on the board of Neuralink, a dual position that governance specialists flagged as a conflict: OpenAI's interest in neural interfaces overlaps with Neuralink's brain-computer work, and the question of who controls neural training data has no settled answer. OpenAI's board reportedly approved the appointment after judging the current overlaps minimal, with information barriers and recusal on sensitive discussions, though some members recorded reserves about future convergence.

What recurs across the sources is not his product decisions but his function as a lightning rod. Stacy Rasgon, cited in the Bloomberg analysis of circular AI capital, framed him as holding the power either to crash the world economy or lead it to the promised land. David Wallace-Wells, writing in the NYT Magazine on 8 May 2026, placed him first among five lab leaders now read as an American oligarchy, and dated the arrival of the backlash precisely: April 2026, a Molotov cocktail at his San Francisco property, then a firearms attack. Andrew Ng's The Batch n°350 logged the same incidents inside the anti-data-center revolt.

His own positions cut against the industry he leads. Jasmine Sun notes he warned in 2021 about the shift from labour to capital; he has argued for aggressively taxing assets, land and AI equities, and that educators should lead the next turn. His essay The Gentle Singularity (June 2025) borrowed a term coined in argument by roon, an OpenAI employee, to describe a transition that arrives slowly rather than as a fast takeoff.
