OpenAI Group PBC is a public benefit corporation in San Francisco, led by Sam Altman, and reported as not cash-flow positive before the end of the decade. It collaborates with Nvidia, Samsung and AMD, holds a stake of up to 10% in AMD, and uses the AMD Instinct MI450.

On 9 July 2026 the company made GPT-5.6 generally available as three tiers (Sol, Terra, Luna) and merged Codex and ChatGPT into one desktop application, the previous app becoming ChatGPT Classic. Codex went from roughly 1 to 8 million active users in five months. METR recorded record reward hacking on Sol, and its time-horizon estimate for the model swung from 11 hours to more than 270.

OpenAI also publishes on work itself. The first Work at the Frontier report from its Economic Research team (27 July 2026) drew on more than 800,000 messages from American ChatGPT users and found 16.8% of work-related messages touching a task belonging to another occupation. The company measures its own product, on its own users, and treats that vantage point as an asset: it claims a position of observation that lets it orient public policy and practice.

The position is contested from several directions. Anthropic and Meta compete with it; Elon Musk and Gadget stand against it. Ethan Mollick's test, that the frontier labs will have believed in ASI when they dissolve their forward deployed engineering teams, lands on an organization that uses Forward Deployed Engineering, and roon, who works there, replied that the obstacle is Hayekian.
