GitHub withdrew Copilot's flat-rate premium requests in June 2026 and replaced it with token billing, over protests. Paul Sawers set that against «Anthropic», which paused its own equivalent change (pulling Agent SDK usage out of Claude subscription limits) on the very day it was due to take effect. Same arithmetic, opposite nerve: GitHub absorbed the unpopularity, «Anthropic» reversed.

That pricing role keeps recurring. Anirban Ghoshal cited a GitHub survey putting AI coding tool usage above 97%, next to Stack Overflow's 84%, as the adoption backdrop against which Cursor, «Claude Code» and Kiro all converged on higher prices. Kate Holterhoff logged the product side of the same season: GitHub shipped Spark, which turns an idea into a full-stack app in one click, while data leaks through «MCP» at GitHub and Supabase forced vendors to tighten security.

The more interesting position is GitHub as the thing others define themselves against. Thomas Petersen announced «Buzz Projects» on 18 August 2026 as a forge on your own Nostr relay where the signing key is the identity, "with no separate token or GitHub account," and where contribution history becomes "more than a set of colored squares on a profile." Shubham Saboo argues the opposite direction, making GitHub the place a product manager's artifacts, diffs, eval results and rollbacks live: "the repo becomes product memory."

Billed against, benchmarked against, designed away from, and still the default store of record.
