DeepLearning.AI publishes The Batch, the weekly newsletter whose "Dear friends" letter carries Andrew Ng's editorials. Three of those letters, dated 24 April, 8 May and 14 August 2026, form the thread that keeps bringing the organization back into view: they are the vehicle through which Ng argues about what software work is becoming.

The August 2026 letter announces The AI Engineering Skills Map, four skills said to rest on an analysis of more than 10,000 job postings, dozens of structured interviews with experts, hiring managers and recruiters, plus surveys. Ng frames AI engineering as skills rather than a job title: "all developers should know how to work with the cloud, only a small number carry the title Cloud engineer". DeepLearning.AI's stake is declared in the letter itself, that its principal focus is helping developers gain exactly these skills. Two of the four skills, software engineering fundamentals and product sense, fall outside the organization's own catalogue, which cuts against reading the map purely as course marketing. No weighting, no sub-skills and no figures are published; the clustering is called informal and the detailed map is deferred to future posts.

The earlier letters show the same posture applied elsewhere: a ranking of how much coding agents accelerate frontend, backend, infrastructure and research work, and a rebuttal of the mass-unemployment narrative built on the incentives of AI labs, enterprise pricing anchored on salaries, and companies relabelling layoffs as AI efficiency.
