Service-as-Software: A new economic model for the age of AI agents

**Matt Kamelman** publie sur le **blog Thoughtworks** le **3 décembre 2025** un article-pivot conceptuel qui formalise la bascule économique majeure des services intellectuels : ***"Service-as-Software" (SaS)*** comme **nouveau modèle économique** succédant au **SaaS**. **Distinction-pivot** : ***"Traditional SaaS is about tools: software that enables humans to solve problems. Service-as-Software (SaS), meanwhile, sells outcomes."*** SaS est *"a new class of tool that doesn't just enable work but instead automates the reasoning process itself"*. **Bascule pricing** : ***"Companies will no longer pay for an agent based on seats or features. Instead they'll pay based on its demonstrated alignment and impact."*** **Trois exemples-types d'agents SaS** : marketing agents (campagnes end-to-end), financial agents (modélisation des prévisions), operations agents (triage des demandes). **Trois capacités** des systèmes agentic SaS : (1) opérer dynamiquement sur des **goals**, pas des fixed workflows ; (2) retenir la **mémoire** à travers les interactions ; (3) coordonner autonomement à travers tools et APIs. **Le "Cognitive Contract" — trois principes** : (1) **Interpretable and auditable** — *"users need to be able to understand why the system made a decision"* ; (2) **Aligned with human goals** — *"the system's objectives must match human intent and ethical boundaries"* ; (3) **Trained and iterated in real time** — *"systems continuously refine behavior based on feedback"*. **Nouveau rôle organisationnel** : le ***"cognitive orchestrator"***, avec trois fonctions opérationnelles : (a) **feedback loop design** (examiner étape par étape) ; (b) **managing uncertainty with guardrails** (règles métier + circuit breakers) ; (c) **measuring alignment** (score d'alignement quantifiable). **Analogie historique structurante** : *"mainframes → client-server → web/cloud, where the cognitive contract remained the same: humans had to instruct the machine"* ; aujourd'hui ce contrat **évolue vers la collaboration** humain-machine. **Pertinence majeure** : c'est la **formalisation conceptuelle anglo-saxonne** la plus claire de la bascule **billable hours / per-seat → outcome-based** observée empiriquement chez **McKinsey/Sternfels** (60 000 = 40 000 humains + 20 000 agents, janvier 2026), **VoxComm/Mandese** (mars 2026, agences), **Bain Rule of 40** (avril 2026, SaaS), **Bain cross-system labor 100 Md$** (mai 2026). Le terme ***"Service-as-Software"*** est destiné à devenir **canonique** comme l'a été *"Software-as-a-Service"* dans les années 2000-2010.
