Gemini — Technology. category: Enterprise generative AI · category: Google generative AI · role: Engine of the integrated chat agent

Andreessen Horowitz's fifth Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps report, published 2025-08-27, placed Gemini second behind ChatGPT on both web visits and mobile active users. Google put four new products on the web list in that edition, with AI Studio, NotebookLM and Google Labs also gaining traction.

Gemini also shows up as a component buried inside other products. Google's Code Wiki, in public preview since 2025-11-13, uses Gemini as the engine of its embedded chat, with the continuously regenerated wiki serving as context. Google's framing: "Not talking to a generic model, but to one that knows your repo end-to-end." A Gemini CLI extension, waitlisted at launch, was meant to bring the same system to private repositories.

Andrej Karpathy pushed that logic further in April 2026. He abandoned MenuGen, an app he had built by vibe coding to generate dish images, once he found he could hand the menu photo straight to Gemini and ask Nanobanana to overlay the dishes. His verdict: "That app shouldn't exist."

Ethan Mollick lists Gemini as one of three paid assistants worth a $20 monthly subscription, and warns that vendors default users to Gemini Flash rather than the flagship model. By March 2026 he counts it among the enterprise deployments that regulated companies already run while their peers still block AI outright. Guillaume Geudin tracks the cost side: Google Gemini pricing rose 20 to 45% between 2020 and 2024.
