Dan Shipper — Person. role: CEO and co-founder of Every (AI-native media/studio), author of Compound Engineering

Dan Shipper published «After Automation» on 21 May 2026, an essay written against the mass-unemployment narratives of Amodei, Sun and Wallace-Wells. Its mechanism is a five-stage commodification cycle: AI makes yesterday's human skill cheap, the cheap skill is adopted at scale, abundance produces sameness, humans demand difference, and experts turn AI on the problems of the moment. The conceptual load sits on one distinction, frame versus framer. Benchmarks measure performance inside a specified frame, and models climb inside frames without displacing whoever sets them. Even at AGI, Shipper argues, "the frame problem regenerates one level up". He cites GPT-5.5 at 62/100 on a senior engineer benchmark against a human range of 80-90, and GDPval at 40-49% of expert human level, reached only with extensive human framing.

In late 2025 he described the operational side. At Every, 100% of the code is written by agents through Compound Engineering, a four-step loop where plan and assess each absorb roughly 40% of the time and the lessons of each cycle are written back for the next one. Claude Code is the main tool, with MCP protocols such as Playwright used to exercise the product like a user. Five products, among them Cora, Spiral, Sparkle and Monologue, are each built and maintained by a single person.

The productivity claim behind all of this, one well-equipped developer doing the work of five, and the claim that a CEO can commit production code between meetings, both come from the person selling the method.
