goose — Technology. category: Open-source agent harness (Block) · creator: Block (formerly Square) · governance: Transferred to the Agentic AI Foundation — repository `github.com/aaif-goose/goose` · genealogy: Open source agent framework from Block launched on January 28, 2025 under Apache 2.0 by its Open Source Program Office, contributed in December 2025 to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation alongside MCP and AGENTS.md; conceptual ancestor of Buzz, over 27,000 stars and 350 contributors · role: Block's internal AI system, built two years before August 2026, presented as agnostic: it integrates different commercial models for employee use · publisher: Block, Inc.

Block released goose on 28 January 2025 under Apache 2.0, through its Open Source Program Office. In December 2025 it contributed the framework to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation, alongside Anthropic's «MCP» and OpenAI's AGENTS.md; the repository moved to `github.com/aaif-goose/goose` and carries more than 27,000 stars and 350 contributors.

What keeps bringing goose back is its position underneath other people's products. Stripe's «Minions» run a customized fork of it, stripped of confirmation prompts because devbox isolation made them redundant, and that fleet merged more than 1,300 pull requests per week by February 2026. «Berd», Block's desktop application, descends from goose and connects to it through the Agent Client Protocol, with the split stated plainly by Block: "goose remains the open agent framework and runtime. Berd is a desktop application built around it." «Buzz» repeats the pattern through `buzz-acp`, which plugs goose, Codex and «Claude Code» into the same workspace and translates ACP to «MCP». «MCP-UI» shipped with goose support from the start.

Inside Block, goose is described as an internal system built two years before August 2026, agnostic by design, wiring several commercial models together for employee use. Jack Dorsey's shareholder letter claims that starting in June, agentic AI helped write and review nearly all production code changes, a self-reported figure with no definition of "nearly all" attached.

The recurring lesson from Block's own writing is that the agent loop turned out to be the easy part. Berd exists because goose, Claude Code and Codex each imposed different interfaces, configuration systems and ways of managing context.
