Steve Yegge

Steve Yegge released Gas Town on 1 January 2026, an open source platform for orchestrating swarms of «Claude Code» agents, and the date was not incidental: in the presentation he gave with Gene Kim on 23 November 2025, he had already declared that anyone still using an IDE after 1 January was a bad engineer.

His argument against the traditional IDE runs through the diver metaphor. The context window is an oxygen tank, and sending one agent into a codebase with a large tank (1M tokens) is the wrong architecture. Yegge wants specialised divers instead: a PM diver, a coding diver, a review diver, a test diver. The industry, he says, keeps building the world's biggest ant rather than a swarm of them.

He works at «Sourcegraph», and the observations he brings are organisational rather than technical. One company measured a 10x productivity gap between engineers using AI and those not, which triggered HR alarms during reviews and a proposal to fire half the engineering staff. Resistance comes from senior and staff engineers calling the output AI slop. After NoOps comes NoDev: support, designers and UX now ship code.

The 5 March 2026 BCG study in Harvard Business Review opens on Gas Town for a different reason, quoting a user who found that «Steve Yegge»'s platform "was moving too fast for me". Speed at that scale registers as cognitive load, not just throughput.
