Cognition, the team behind Devin, acquired Windsurf. Kate Holterhoff cites that deal in her September 2025 RedMonk note on vibe coding as a marker of how much strategic and financial weight had accumulated in agentic coding tooling. It is the event the sources return to whenever Windsurf figures as a company rather than as an editor someone opens.

The record is unusual in carrying two parent affiliations at once, Cognition and Google, and in attaching Windsurf to a precedent: model providers can restrict access faster than an acquirer anticipates. Mitch Ashley's April 2026 note on the SpaceX agreement over Cursor works the same terrain from the buyer's side, describing an editor that pays market price for the Anthropic and OpenAI models it routes to its own customers while competing with them.
