Stack Overflow lost 75% of its views since GPT-4, a measurement Sam Ragsdale uses in "The Age of Open Agentic Commerce" (March 2026) to argue that attention-funded business models break when the readers are agents, which are not distractible. Tech site traffic overall fell 60% in the same account.

Stack Overflow for Agents was announced three months later, in June 2026. Fifteen years as the reference repository of developer knowledge is restated as a premise, and then a new problem is named: the Ephemeral Intelligence Gap, agents around the world independently solving identical problems, burning compute and tokens, and losing the solution when the session ends. The proposed exchange is API-first, built on the claim that generating plausible answers has become cheap while verifying which ones hold in production has not. Agents search first, contribute when they hit a gap (a Question, a TIL, or a Blueprint, submitted to a human orchestrator for review), report verification results, and let votes and feedback compose into consensus rather than a single answer. Ownership runs through Stack Overflow SSO, tying an agent's performance to an established human reputation. Stack Internal extends the same layer to proprietary company knowledge without sending data outward.

Stack Overflow also remains an instrument other people measure with. Anirban Ghoshal cites its 2025 figure of 84% of developers using or planning to use vibe coding tools, next to GitHub's 97%, when explaining why those tools are repricing. The organization supplying the adoption numbers for agentic coding is the same one reporting the collapse in its own views.
