Kiro, the specification-driven IDE AWS launched in July 2025, is built on Code OSS and runs on Claude Sonnet 4.0 and 3.7, models from Anthropic. Its "spec coding" method splits work into requirement decomposition, technical design and task implementation; AWS later added a "Vibe" mode for looser, vibe coding style generation. The dependency underneath keeps resurfacing. Mitch Ashley, writing for The Futurum Group in April 2026 about the SpaceX-Cursor agreement, ranked AWS the most exposed of the large vendors for that reason: the strategy needs either Anthropic to win the neutral IDE market, or AWS to consolidate a vertical stack of its own.

Andy Warfield, an S3 engineer at AWS, announced on 26 August 2026 that DuckLabs, the team developing DuckDB, was joining AWS as a subsidiary, the project staying open source under MIT and under the DuckDB Foundation. AWS had been a DuckDB customer and then sponsor of its Iceberg extension, now past 800,000 downloads a week, and runs DuckDB internally for dashboards, CLI tooling, server-side accelerators and bridges between systems. Warfield describes the audience as developers "and increasingly agents".

AWS also backs AAIF under the Linux Foundation alongside Google, Microsoft, Bloomberg and Cloudflare, the vehicle to which Anthropic contributed MCP. And it supplies one of the numbers Didier Girard used in June 2026 to argue that AI aimed at IT pays before AI aimed at business processes: Bedrock redeveloped by six people in 72 days, against 30 people and 18 months.
